Because we are 'cultivating' our web-store, please forgive us if you stumble into holes, over rocks or piles of mulch. Our on-line catalogue is undergoing a tremendous amount of work at this time and, even when we think it's completed, it will be like the seasons and gardens ... always growing and changing.

La Vie En Rose Gardens is a private garden in Eastern Ontario CANADA. The Gardens were first established in 1995 in the capital city of Canada. Having quickly outgrown our 'city lot', each and every plant was dug up, transported and re-planted in the countryside in 2001, the Gardens having now set root on our almost 3 acres of farmland. In spring of 2002, we tilled, lifted rock and stone, mulched and enlarged the gardens, adding test gardens, Iris and Lily beds, cutting gardens and seed production beds, arbours and a pergola.

We are not a large commercial enterprise. We are a small private garden licensed to sell our product. Our aim is to provide an interesting and reliable seed/dry root service to enthusiastic home gardeners. From time to time, we supply some smaller commercial nurseries with seeds and Iris rhizomes. As most of our products are available in limited quantities only, we may be able to provide more with some species/varieties. If you are a smaller commercial nursery interested in our products, please send us a request and we will advise you of availability.

SEEDS: Nearly all seeds come from open pollinated plants grown on our property, a cold USDA Zone 4b-5. Newly introduced varieties as well as those we can't grow in our cold climate are purchased from reputable international seed sources every year. This ensures that what we grow ourselves in our test gardens and offer to you for your gardens is of the highest quality.

Our seed packaging reflects our great pride in our gardens, our products and our reputation. Our retail management background ensures that you get the highest of customer service and reliability. Our graphics and printing background ensures that you will receive professional seed packaging, complete with plant description and sowing instructions. Our professional packaging will include all that we know of the plant, how deep to sow your seed and where to plant it after it has sprouted.

Our prices are based on availability. Our seed has been shipped throughout the world over the years and we take great pride in knowing that we have helped so many gardens flourish! We guarantee your seeds to arrive or we will gladly refill the order if available or substitute if the variety is sold out.

BEARDED IRIS: All Iris rhizomes come from our own plants grown on our property, a cold USDA Zone 4b-5. Newly introduced varieties are purchased from reputable domestic and international growers/hybridizers and allowed to increase.

Iris rhizomes are dug up, cleaned and shipped starting late July. The last shipment of Bearded Iris is August 20. Although they can be shipped safely after that period, absolutely no guarantee will be given for its survival over the winter months as Iris rhizomes need a minimum of 6 weeks prior to frost in order to set root.

Bearded irises are one of the easiest perennials to grow. With a minimum of care they will produce beautiful blooms year after year.

Because of the different cultivars of Bearded Iris bloom at different pieriods, you will prolong your bloom season by growing all sizes of bearded irises. Miniature Dwarf Bearded Iris normally bloom first alongside Daffodils and Tulips where as most Tall Bearded Iris bloom later in mid-summer. To give you a better feel for the different Bearded Iris available, we have listed them below.

MDB The tiny Miniature Dwarf Bearded (MDB) irises bloom early and grow up to 8 inches in height.

SDB Next to bloom are the small Standard Dwarf Bearded (SDB) irises that grow from just over 8" to about 15 inches.

IB Intermediate Bearded (IB) irises bloom next and are in the 16 to 27 inch height range.

Next, there are three bearded iris classes that bloom at generally the same time. They are Miniature Tall Bearded (MTB) irises, Border Bearded (BB) irises and Tall Bearded (TB) irises.

MTB are in the neighborhood of 16 to 27 inches tall with flexuous stems and small flowers.

BB are also 16 to 27 inches with smaller than TB-sized flowers to fit their shorter stalks.

TB are over 27 inches tall with larger flowers and are by far the most widely grown and admired. Quite a few iris varieties bloom again in the fall. A list of those varieties that rebloom in various parts of the country on a regular basis may be obtained through the American Iris Society.

If you live in the Ottawa/Hull region or are planning a visit to the area, please contact us to find out when and where we will be making our Bearded Iris available.
